Desde a faculdade, o Dr. Rodrigo Barros está envolvido com pesquisas na área básica e clínica. Durante a graduação, recebeu bolsa do Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa (CNPq) para estudar o efeitos dos antibióticos no fungo Candida albicans. Após a graduação, trabalhou no departamento de Endocrinologia dos hospitais Cook County e Michael Reese, Chicago, Estados Unidos, onde participou de estudos clínicos sobre Diabetes Mellitus em pacientes crônicos. Durante o mestrado e doutorado, recebeu várias bolsas do CNPq, CAPES, FAPESP, e Instituto Karolinska, para estudar a importância dos hormônios na regulação da glicemia e no desenvolvimento da resistência insulínica, problema comum na obesidade, Diabetes Melittus, e outras doenças endocrinológicas. Após o doutorado, realizou pós-doutorados na Instituto Karolinska, Estocolmo, Suécia, e Universidade de Houston, TX, Estados Unidos, onde continuou a estudar a ação hormonal em diversos mecanismos endocrinológicos. Trabalhou também como Professor Assistente de Pesquisa na Universidade de Houston até 2016. Lecionou por mais de 5 anos na Faculdade de Medicina da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná – Londrina. Seus trabalhos já foram apresentados em vários congressos nacionais e internacionais. Atualmente, é revisor do Conselho Europeu de Pesquisa e da HealthCentral Editorial, Estados Unidos e membro da Endocrine Society dos Estados Unidos.
